Elon head coach Matt Matheny has been fired after ten seasons at the helm of the program. Matheny went 151-169 during his tenure, including 14-18 and 11-21 in his final two seasons, respectively.
A Shelby, NC native, Matheny arrived at Elon in 2009 after spending the previous 16 seasons on Bob McKillop‘s staff at Davidson. The Elon job was his first head coaching position at any level, starting at Davidson in 1993 right after finishing his playing career at the school.
“I want to thank Matt for his leadership over the past 10 years,” AD Dave Blank said Monday in a statement. “However, after a thorough review of the program, I believe a new direction at this time is necessary to move our program forward and provide the best chance for our student-athletes to compete for championships.”
Some replacement candidates that should warrant consideration from Blank include: North Carolina Central head coach LeVelle Moton, North Carolina A&T head coach Jay Joyner, Presbyterian head coach Dustin Kerns (graduated from Clemson and spent seven seasons coaching at Wofford) and NC State assistant Takayo Siddle (a NC-native and Gardner-Webb grad who also coached at UNC Wilmington).
