  • Hometown: Statesville, North Carolina
  • Alma Mater: Davidson College (BA, 1992)
  • Played football for four years at Davidson and also played basketball for two years under longtime Wildcat’s head coach Bob McKillop
  • Briefly played professional football overseas before joining McKillop‘s staff as an assistant in 1993
    • Though he did not attend to make coaching a career at first, Matheny ended up working on McKillop‘s staff for sixteen seasons at Davidson
    • Promoted to associate head coach in 2003, a position he held for his final six seasons at the school
    • Time at Davidson included five trips to the NCAA Tournament, highlighted by Stephen Curry leading the Wildcats to the Elite Eight in 2008
  • Hired in March 2009 to become the new head coach at Elon, located less than 100 miles from Davidson
  • Returned to Davidson in May 2022, rejoining the coaching staff of Bob McKillop
  • Along with his wife, Jennifer, has one son and one daughter
