Matt McCall is out after five seasons at UMass

UMass announced Tuesday that it would be parting ways with head men’s basketball coach Matt McCall at the conclusion of this season. McCall has been with the program for five seasons and has gone 58-81 overall.

“I want to thank Matt for his five years of service to UMass and our basketball program,” AD Ryan Bamford said in a release. “Matt poured himself in to this role and has been a great teammate and partner as we worked to build a championship program. Unfortunately, we have not met the results we desire on the court and I believe a change at the end of the season is in the best interest of the program. I am grateful that Matt and I shared a mutual desire to have him finish the 2021-2022 campaign with the men in our program over the coming weeks.”

The Minutemen are currently 12-16 (5-11) and in 11th place in the A-10 standings with two games remaining. McCall will continue to coach the team this week and during next week’s A-10 Tournament.

McCall was hired in 2017 after two successful seasons as the head coach at Chattanooga, including a NCAA bid in his first year. The 40-year old was a student manager at Florida under Billy Donovan and started his career with coaching jobs at his alma mater and at Florida Atlantic.
