The New York Mets are facing something like that, except in sports. In the month of July, for baseball, it is like striking with many balls and still not getting the win you are looking for. They are rushing against time, and it is getting heated. The bad part? They are desperate, and making desperate decisions could cause them to regret it as well. So what then should they do, and how will they navigate this situation?
The Mets need help as soon as possible
The Mets are one of those teams where cracks have been seen because of the usual baseball issues that most, if not all, teams face. So, this is not a new thing that the Mets have faced; however, they do need help as soon as possible. The overwhelming feeling that they are facing is normal, but something needs to be fixed really soon before the deadline closes.
Everybody has a different idea about what the front office ought to do. Recruit a well-known closer? Instead, try a power bat. Or rely on the youthful arms to take the initiative? When the bullpen blows a lead, everyone in New York becomes a manager. However, the majority of Mets supporters are aware of the root of the issue. Therefore, whatever they decide now is very, very critical.
The Mets are looking for lefty relief help because bullpen stress is real
Right now, their goal is to look for a reliable player, a left-handed reliever. They need a player who will set the tone for the Mets, and they will be able to push the boundaries and cement those cracks we spoke about. Do we have a name or a potential that the Mets can get before the deadline? Jon Heyman of the New York Post said,
Look, the Mets absolutely need bullpen help, particularly a left-handed [pitcher]. Danny Coulombe, he’s gonna be interested by the Mets.”
Have the Mets found what they were looking for?
It looks like he is a potential, and maybe the Mets might consider him. He is a gem from the looks of it. Coulombe makes all kinds of sense for the Mets. In addition to his stellar 0.68 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 26.2 innings thrown this season, he is a likely target for almost every contending team because he is with the Minnesota Twins, who are anticipated to be sellers at the deadline.
It’s possible that adding Coulombe will be the only bullpen acquisition New York needs to make it. The thing is, when a team needs a new player or an addition, it has to be someone we all believe can make a difference, not just a player who adds numbers to the MLB or just for the sake of it. We need to see things like starting pitcher rankings highlight Cy Young winner retaining the top spot.
Until it isn’t, baseball has a long season. By August, there is nowhere to cover up blown saves or conceal weary arms. A front office can demonstrate whether they are serious or merely hopeful at the trade cut-off. Adding a lefty like Coulombe could be a sign that the Mets are a team that will persevere through long innings. The hardest part for fans is waiting. But if everything goes according to plan, the bullpen door might open up next month, and a new lefty might be jogging in Queens under the big lights.
