Penn State hires Purdue assistant Micah Shrewsberry as next head coach

Penn State announced on Monday the hiring of Micah Shrewsberry as the Nittany Lions’ next head basketball coach. Shrewsberry has been at Purdue since 2019, his second stint there with a six-year turn with Brad Stevens and the Boston Celtics in between.

“Micah was a name that immediately jumped to the top of our list with his experience in the Big Ten and the NBA,” said AD Sandy Barbour in the release. “He has had success at all levels and knows what it takes to develop a program into a consistent national contender. He has learned from and worked under some of the most respected coaches in the country in Brad Stevens and Matt Painter. Micah will be an exceptional leader for the young men in our basketball program and I can’t wait for him to get to know our student-athletes. We know he will be a great addition to our Penn State family!”

Shrewsberry is originally from Indianapolis and has spent most of career coaching in his home state. This will be his second head coaching job, but his first at the D-I level, as he was at NAIA IU South Bend from 2005-07.

“I’m extremely humbled and excited to be the next head coach at Penn State University,” said Shrewsberry. “The values of this university and its commitment to excellence are the major reasons why this job was so appealing to me. I can’t wait to arrive on campus to begin working with our tremendous student-athletes. My family and I are looking forward to becoming a part of the Nittany Lion family!”

Shrewsberry will replace interim head coach Jim Ferry, who led the Lions to a 11-14 record this season following the resignation of former head coach Pat Chambers. Penn State has been to the NCAA Tournament just twice since 2001, the most recent being in 2011.
