Michael Fly fired after four seasons as Florida Gulf Coast head coach

On Saturday, Florida Gulf Coast announced the firing of head men’s basketball coach Michael Fly. Promoted in 2018 after seven seasons as an assistant, Fly went 55-59 overall with no postseason appearances in four seasons at the helm.

“With deep appreciation for Coach Fly’s numerous sacrifices, efforts and contributions to FGCU over the past eleven years (on and off the court),” AD Ken Kavanagh said in the release. “In a gut wrenching decision, I have decided that we need to transition to a different path and will be commencing a search for a new head men’s basketball coach. We extremely value Michael’s friendship and love of the Green & Blue and wish him all the best personally and professionally in his future endeavors.”

The Eagles were eliminated from the Atlantic Sun Tournament on Thursday, wrapping up a season that saw them finish with their best record under Fly (21-11). Despite this being his best season, expectations at FGCU are high following the success of former head coaches Andy Enfield and Joe Dooley. Fly was an assistant under both and was a part of all three NCAA Tournaments in program history, including the 2013 Sweet Sixteen run that brought “Dunk City” to the masses.
