Mike Dunleavy, Sr. is the new Tulane head coach

Some surprising news out of New Orleans as Mike Dunleavy, Sr. has been officially introduced as the new head coach of the Tulane Green Wave. Dunleavy’s coaching career has spanned nearly 30 years, but he has spent that time entirely in the NBA.

Tulane has not been to the NCAA Tournament since 1995 and since joining The American in 2014 has won just 9 total conference games. Athletic director Troy Dannen looked to Dunleavy to provide some star power and exposure to a program severely lacking in both. Dunleavy’s recruiting abilities remain to be seen, but his long and successful career (he was the NBA Coach of the Year in 1999) gives Tulane reason to be excited about the future.

Dunleavy is a Brooklyn-native who played his college ball at South Carolina before starting a 10+ year professional career. He’s the second new coach hired in the AAC this offseason after former Stanford head coach Johnny Dawkins landed at UCF earlier this week.
