Mike Lonergan has been fired as George Washington head basketball coach amidst an independent investigation that he had verbally abused his players. Earlier this summer, a Washington Post report released complaints from players that Lonergan’s behavior was out of line. The allegations were not limited to players, as it was reported that the head coach often made offensive remarks about GW athletic director Patrick Nero.
“We recognize and embrace our responsibility to provide a supportive and respectful environment for all members of our community,” said Provost Forrest Maltzman.
No interim or replacement has been named at this time. The Colonials recently returned from an overseas trip to Japan. Hajj Turner has been associate head coach at GW during Lonergan’s tenure.
Lonergan was hired at GW in 2011 after spending 6 seasons at Vermont. He was twice named America East Coach of the Year while at Vermont (2007, 2011) and had previously been named the Division III National Coach of the Year while at Catholic University in 2001.
