- Michael Thomas Lonergan
- Born January 28, 1966
- Hometown: Bowie, Maryland
- Alma Mater: The Catholic University of America (BA, 1988) / American International College (MS, 1989)
- The MD-native attended Archbishop Carroll HS in DC, then played basketball at Catholic University (also in DC)
- Started his coaching career at American International, spending one year as an assistant coach while earning his master’s
- Spent three years as an assistant under head coach Jack Bruen at Colgate; Lonergan had played for Bruen at CUA
- Returned to his alma mater CUA in 1992, coaching the Division III Cardinals for twelve seasons
- Won nine CAC regular season titles, reaching the NCAA D-III Tournament in each of those nine seasons
- In 2001, Lonergan’s CUA team won the NCAA Division III National Championship
- Moved back up to Division I in 2004, spending one season at Maryland assisting Hall of Fame head coach Gary Williams
- Hired as the head coach at Vermont in 2005, coaching the Catamounts for six seasons
- Won 126 games at Vermont, reaching the postseason four times (one NCAA, two NITs, one CBI)
- Returned to DC in 2011 when he was hired as the new head coach at George Washington
- Reached the NCAA Tournament in 2014 and the NIT in both 2015 and 2016, winning the NIT title in the latter year
- Lonergan was fired in September 2016, a few months after a story ran in the Washington Post detailing allegations of “verbal and emotional abuse” against GWU players by the head coach
- Roughly a year later, the school’s AD Patrick Nero quietly resigned from his position
- Along with his wife, Maggie, has three sons and two daughters
