- Played both basketball and golf at NAIA Milligan College (TN)
- Started his coaching career as an assistant for two seasons at Division II King College (TN)
- Spent one year as a graduate assistant, followed by two years as DBO at Clemson under head coach Oliver Purnell
- After one year as an assistant under Barclay Radebaugh at Charleston Southern, Morrell joined Shaka Smart‘s staff at VCU
- Worked with Smart at VCU for four seasons (two as DBO and two as an assistant) and then three more seasons as an assistant at Texas (one as Director of Program Development and two as an assistant)
- Hired in April 2018 to be the head coach of the UNC Asheville Bulldogs
- After winning just 4 games in his first year, led the Bulldogs to a 15-16 record in his second
- Reached the CBI in 2022, going 17-15 that season, and the following year won an outright Big South title, was named Big South COY and won the Big South Tournament to reach the NCAA Tournament
