  • Born May 26, 1951
  • Alma Mater: Sam Houston State University (BA, 1973)
  • Originally from Indiana, he started his career playing for Press Maravich at LSU and finished at Sam Houston State, playing for Archie Porter
  • First major collegiate coaching job was a four-year stint on Billy Tubbs‘ staff at Oklahoma
  • Hired in 1984 to be the head coach at Arkansas-Little Rock and led the Trojans for six successful seasons
    • Won three TAAC titles, three TAAC Tournaments and reached the postseason five times (three NCAAs and two NITs)
    • Left in 1990 with an overall record of 133-60; his 133 wins is the second-most in program history
  • Took the Lamar head coaching job in 1990, but did not have as much success during his three years with the Cardinals
    • Went 42-44 overall and resigned in 1993 amidst allegations that he was verbally abusive to his players
  • After Lamar, Newell spent several years scouting in the NBA (for the Heat, Pistons and Clippers) and coaching at the JUCO level in Louisiana
  • Became a head coach once again in 2001, when he was hired to take over at D-II Arkansas-Monticello
    • Led the Boll Weevils for nine seasons, going 126-123 overall and reaching one D-II NCAA Tournament (in 2006)
  • Was the head coach at D-II West Alabama for two years, going 18-36 before resigning in 2013
  • Since 2015, Newell has been the head coach at NAIA Dillard University in New Orleans, LA
    • Compiled a 114-76 record through seven seasons, with two GCAC titles and NAIA Tournament appearances
    • Resigned in September 2022 citing nagging health issues with his knee that he needed to deal with
