  • Michael Thomas Rice Sr.
  • Alma Mater: Duquesne University (BA, 1962)
  • Played for longtime head coach Red Manning at Duquesne from 1960-62; part of the Dukes 1962 NIT team
    • Drafted in the 8th round of the 1962 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons but opted for a coaching career
  • Began his career with 13 years of coaching at the high school level
  • Joined John Cinicola’s staff at Duquesne as an assistant in 1977 then become the Dukes’ head coach a year later
  • Left his alma mater for Youngstown State in 1982, coaching the Penguins for the next five seasons
    • Was 75-67 overall and twice finished second in the OVC but failed to reach the postseason
  • After leaving YSU in 1987, he briefly coached the Youngstown Pride of now-defunct World Basketball League
  • Began his second career in 1987, joining ESPN as a college basketball analyst and later did WBL broadcasts
    • Hired by the Portland Trail Blazers in 1991 to do radio broadcasts for the team’s games alongside Bill Schonely
      • In 1994, Rice became the first (and as of 2021, still only) broadcaster to be ejected from a game by a NBA referee
    • Since 2006, Rice has done the team’s television color commentary with play-by-play man Mike Barrett
  • Along with his wife, Kathy, has two daughters and one son, Mike Jr., who is also a basketball coach
