Ohio State assistant Mike Schrage hired as Elon head coach

Elon announced Friday the hiring of Ohio State assistant Mike Schrage as the new head coach of the Phoenix men’s basketball program. This is the first head coaching opportunity for Schrage, who has an extensive resume with other stops at Butler, Stanford, Duke, Ole Miss and during his undergrad years at Indiana.

“Mike has learned under some of the game’s best coaches in Bob Knight, Mike Krzyzewski, Johnny Dawkins and Chris Holtmann throughout his career,” Elon AD Dave Blank said in a statement. “His deep recruiting ties to North Carolina and beyond, his success at academically-rigorous institutions and his commitment to the total student-athlete experience makes us excited to have him as the leader of our men’s basketball program.”

The Phoenix have never appeared in the NCAA Tournament, moving up to Division I prior to the 1999-2000 season. The program’s sole D-I postseason berth came in 2013, a first-round CIT appearance.

“The commitment to athletics that Elon is making is impressive and the future is very bright,” Schrage said. “Elon is a great fit for me and my family, and we can’t wait to build great relationships with our student-athletes and the Elon community.”
