  • Alma Mater: Northeast Louisiana State College (BA, 1967)
  • The Louisiana-native played at then Northeast Louisiana State (now Louisiana-Monroe) under Lenny Fant
  • After his playing days were over, Vining stayed on for two seasons as a graduate assistant on Fant‘s staff
  • Spent seven seasons as the head coach at nearby Bastrop HS, where he won a 4A state title
    • Coached four future NBA draft picks, including Calvin Natt, who would be All-America at Northeast Louisiana
  • Returned to his alma mater in 1978 to be an assistant coach under Fant; stayed on under Benny Hollis
  • Elevated to head coach of the Warhawks in 1981, leading the program for 24 seasons
  • After retiring from coaching in 2005, Vining stayed at ULM for five more years working as assistant athletic director
  • Inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame (c/o 2010)
