Mo Williams hired as Jackson State head coach

Jackson State has named Mo Williams as its next head men’s basketball coach, the school announced Monday. Williams resigned last week as the head coach at Alabama State, a precursor to his hiring at JSU.

A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Maurice “Mo” Williams played his college basketball at Alabama before embarking on a 14-year NBA career. He was an All-Star in 2009 while playing for the Cavaliers and returned to the team at the end of his career, reuniting with LeBron James and winning the 2016 NBA Championship.

He started his coaching career at Cal State Northridge in 2018, spending two years as an assistant under Mark Gottfried, his former coach with the Tide. He spent the last two years leading the Alabama State Hornets, going 14-35 (12-24 SWAC) overall.

Williams joins Deion Sanders, the Tigers’ head football coach, as former professional athletes to be employed by Jackson State. He replaces Wayne Brent, who retired after nine seasons at the helm.
