In February 1996, the Pokémon game, Pokémon Red and Green, was first released in Japan on Gameboy and introduced two of the legendary Pokémon: Mew and Mewtwo, the latter being a clone of the former, as the name itself suggest. Now, after almost three decades since the release and after years of rumors and theories, a third name has resurfaced from recent information released: Mewthree. Will we finally see real and concrete data about this Pokémon that has been theorized for years, or just unfounded speculations? Stay tuned in this article.
The second Mew clone? Revisiting the origins of Mewthree
Despite being the source of much speculation and even false information, Mewthree, which has never appeared in any Pokémon game, does exist and has been mentioned in manga before. This appearance brought back discussions among fans about when — and if — it would be seen in the games.
The only appearance of Mewthree was in the manga Pokémon Pocket Monsters, where Red’s Clefairy transforms into Mewthree after merging its DNA with Mewtwo’s DNA. In fact, it is not exactly a real Pokémon, since it is a transformation of Red’s Clefairy, but its official name became Mewthree. This idea arose after a proposal for a second clone of Mew, following the positive reception and success of Mewtwo.
Recent news that are actually official leaks associate, for the first time, the second clone — or a simple evolution of Red’s Clefairy — with one of the games in the Pokémon franchise.
Leaked files hint at Mewthree — or was it something else?
After a series of leaks from Game Freak, one of the main pieces of information collected from old files dates back to the planning and release of the game Pokémon X and Y — launched in 2013. In these files, there are mentions suggesting that Mewthree would have been one of the Pokémon ideas for inclusion in the game, although we know that it didn’t actually make it into reality.
Still, the reliability of this information remains uncertain. The leaked texts are vague and open to interpretation, making it unclear whether Mewthree was truly intended as a new clone of Mew or perhaps had a different origin. In fact, the files seem to point towards a potential evolution of Mew or Mewtwo, suggesting that the inclusion of Mewthree may have been a misunderstanding of the data.
Game Freak remains silent
The lack of confirmation or denial of the files, of course, leaves fans free to theorize based on the acquired information. Game Freak could simply provide the information completely, but the point is that, whether planned or not, the absence of pronouncement from Game Freak ends up being a good measure that keeps the subject active within the gaming community through theories and discussions.
No confirmation, no denial: The Mewthree mystery remains
It’s important to say that no official information has been released about the intention to include Mewthree in the games, whether in a past title or in a possible future game. Still, the leaks served as a source of information that brought back the enthusiasm of traditional fans of the franchise on this subject, after almost 30 years since the premiere of the first Pokémon game, which also marks the first appearance of Mew and Mewtwo.
For now, we’re left waiting for a possible confirmation from the brand, which to be honest, is unlikely, given the history of silence on past leaks. Unless a definitive confirmation of Mewthree’s absence is made, the idea of this Pokémon in the games will continue to be a source of interest and theories from players, and who knows, if they are strong enough, it might be enough for Game Freak to pay special attention to it.
