- Hometown: Watertown, Wisconsin
- Alma Mater: Maranatha Baptist University (BS, 1997) / University of Wisconsin (MS)
- The Wisconsin-native played at Div III Maranatha Baptist in Watertown, WI
- Started his coaching career at his alma mater, joining the coaching staff for three seasons after graduation
- Spent two years an assistant at D-III UW-Whitewater before taking the head coaching job at Romulus HS outside Detroit
- Went 222-52 over 11 seasons in Romulus; won the 2013 Class A state championship, his final season at the school
- Joined Bobby Hurley‘s staff at Buffalo in 2013, and after two seasons was elevated to head coach to replace Hurley
- Won the MAC Tournament and led the Bulls to the 2016 NCAA Tournament in his first season on the job
- Won back-to-back MAC titles (2018-19) and returned to the NCAAs both seasons by way MAC Tournament crowns
- Left Buffalo in March 2019 to take the job as head coach at Alabama
- In 2020-21, Oats led the Tide to an outright SEC title and SEC Tournament crown and was named SEC COY
- His 2022-23 team was ranked as high as #1 and entered the NCAA Tournament as the top overall seed, but was eliminated in S16
- The following year, Oats and the 4-seed Tide reached the NCAA Final Four for the first time in program history
