Nebraska fires head coach Tim Miles after seven seasons

After several weeks (years?) of awkwardness between Nebraska AD Bill Moos and head basketball coach Tim Miles, Moos announced Tuesday that a change was being made.

Miles was given a contract extension last off-season for just one additional year, with Moos saying he “just felt to protect the university at this juncture that a one-year extension to three overall would be good, and [they] could talk about it again [in 2019].” Not exactly a vote of confidence.

After the Huskers jumped out to a 9-2 start to this season, they slid back to the bottom of the conference and ultimately into a 4-seed in the NIT (thanks to a pair of Big Ten Tournament victories). Throughout Miles’ time in this year’s NIT, media reports have surfaced regarding Fred Hoiberg‘s desire to come back home to Nebraska and that he was considered a “front-runner” for a job that wasn’t even open yet.

So Tuesday marks the end of the Nebraska journey for the likable Miles, who should have no problem landing another job as soon as he is ready to get back into coaching. He finished with a 116-114 record at UNL but has a 399-334 career coaching record and has been a head coach at some level every single season since 1995.

As for Nebraska, Hoiberg is certainly choice A, B and C. The only hurdle may be whether or not a better offer comes in the form of an NBA opening.
