Newcastle United has completed the signing of German striker Nick Woltemade. The 23-year-old is seen as a potential replacement for Alexander Isak, who has been training separately, away from the squad. The move quenches the thirst of Newcastle fans who have been parched from goal-scoring talent since Isak decided to effectively go on strike. As a result of Isak’s refusal to play for Newcastle United, Eddie Howe was forced to play Anthony Gordon in the number 9 position, which is not ideal. Woltemade is a young striker with a lot of potential following a foundation-building career in the Bundesliga.
Nick Woltemade is a perfect fit for Newcastle United
Woltemade is exactly what Newcastle needs at the moment. A traditional number 9 who has all the potential to score goals in the Premier League and become a success at Newcastle. The deal could have a domino effect on the Isak transfer, as many have speculated that Newcastle were holding on to Isak because they were unable to sign a replacement in this transfer window.
Woltemade spent the first ten years of his career playing for Werder Bremen’s academy before making the move to the first team in 2020. His first season in the Bundesliga saw Woltemade score 2 goals in all competitions for the German side. He was quickly scouted by Stuttgart and spent one season with the team before the bigger clubs started showing interest. He was seen chatting it up with the players and management of Newcastle on Saturday.
“I’m really happy to be at this amazing club. From the first contact, I felt like the club really wanted me and had big plans for me. It’s a big step in my life to leave Germany, but everybody has welcomed me so well, and it already feels like family. I have a really good feeling from speaking to the head coach that this is the right place for me to find my best level. I know the stadium from watching games on television — it looks amazing, and I know the atmosphere is crazy. I’m really excited to play and start scoring goals here.” – Newcastle United signing Nick Woltemade
Newcastle have finally got a new striker who can score goals
Newcastle have been in damage control mode since the news broke that Alexander Isak was not going to join the team’s preseason tour. He has refused to play for the club and has stated that Newcastle broke promises that were made to him when he signed. Newcastle has denied such claims and has spent the majority of the past few months trying to find a solution to the saga.
Newcastle has lost out on signing several players that they had their eyes on, as every target in their sights opted to sign for one of their Premier League rivals. Among the players they have tried and failed to sign this offseason are:
- Liam Delap
- João Pedro
- Benjamin Sesko
- Hugo Ekitike
“We’re delighted to get Nick’s signing over the line so quickly. He fits the profile for exactly what we have been looking to add to our attacking options. He’s strong in a lot of areas — he has great technical ability and has proven himself to be a real threat in one of Europe’s top leagues — but he’s also still at an age where he has plenty of room to develop and grow here.” – Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe
Is there light at the end of the tunnel for Newcastle United
Newcastle signed Woltemade from Stuttgart for a reported £64.9 million ($87.5m). With the Isak saga having no end in sight, two Newcastle United directors even visited Isak’s home to try to find a resolution to the never-ending drama coming out of Tynside. With the new season underway, Newcastle’s performances have been positive overall, but they are clearly lacking a out-and-out striker that can score goals on the regular. Nick Woltemade could be the answer that Newcastle has been searching for.
