The NFL Playoffs are the culmination of the team’s efforts over the season. The process of seeding teams for the playoffs has long been under scrutiny by the pundits and teams that do not make the postseason. This year has marked some changes in the NFL. The team owners are due to meet and vote on a list of changes for the future. Some of those changes make more sense than others. For example, the Detroit Lions’ proposal to change the seeding format makes sense to most, as it will certainly make the end of the regular season more entertaining.

What proposals are the NFL team owners due to vote on this year?

Some of the proposals set out for the team owners to vote on have some weight behind them. The ban on the Tush Push, for example, has been on the minds of the NFL insiders for some time now. The Eagles made the play famous, or infamous, by successfully using the play in their championship run last year. This change has garnered the most discussion as to the fairness of the play and its effect on the league.

Another proposal to consider for the NFL owners is the change to the kickoff rule. The proposal calls for allowing teams to declare and run onside kicks at any point in a game, rather than just the fourth quarter. All the changes being proposed have been studied in depth before being submitted to the NFL for a possible vote by the NFL team owners.

The changes in the NFL are coming fast and hard recently, as the sport of American football is going through a bit of an evolution. This comes off the back of fans’ demands and the growing global interest in football. The international expansion is evidence that football is becoming more popular in countries around the globe, as most fans have never had direct contact with the sport in their own country.

How will the NFL Playoffs be different for future seasons to come?

The new change to the NFL playoff structure has come from the Detroit Lions. The Lions entered the NFL Playoffs in 2024 as the wildcard. The wildcard seed is assigned to a team that did not win their respective division title. The winner of each division is given the top seed and that could all be about to change if the Detroit Lions proposal gets the votes from the NFL team owners.

The proposal would suggest giving teams in the NFL a seed number based on their regular season record. With the reseeding taking place after the first round. This will have a positive impact on the last few games of the regular season as the teams will need to compete for that elusive top seed, instead of being guaranteed a seed spot based purely on their finishing position in their division.

The move to assign seeding numbers according to a team’s entire regular season record as opposed to their final position would mean that instead of resting players in preparation for the playoffs, the teams would need to give their all before the seeding process takes place, making the end of the season games more entertaining for the fans and more profitable for the NFL as a whole. The fans of the NFL are evolving as well.

When will the new changes come into effect for the NFL Playoffs?

With international interest in the NFL at an all-time high, the insiders are surely pointing out the financial power that the NFL has. The sport is all about entertaining the fans, and the changes to the NFL Playoffs being proposed by the Lions would make those season-ending games more profitable. Fans have grown tired of seeing their top players not playing in those last few games of the regular season. The changes, if successfully voted on, would likely only become a reality in the 2026 season.
