- Graduated from Springfield Gardens HS (NY) and played collegiately for the Knights at D-II Queens College (NY)
- HS teammates with future NBA All-Star Anthony Mason and college teammates with future coach Glenn Braica
- Started his coaching career at Archbishop Molloy HS in Queens, where he coached the freshman team
- Became head coach at his alma mater in 1991, but went just 24-84 in four seasons at the helm
- Joined Bill Self‘s coaching staff at Oral Roberts in 1995 and spent the next nine years working as one of his assistants at ORU (1995-97), Tulsa (1997-2000), Illinois (2000-03) and Kansas (2003-04)
- Was part of six NCAA Tournaments (with three Elite Eights) and four conference titles (two WAC and two Big Ten)
- Returned to Queens in 2004, taking over as the head coach at St. John’s
- Was 81-101 in six seasons with the Red Storm, going to the CBI in 2009 and NIT in 2010
- Finished above .500 just twice and was fired in 2010 after failing to get the team out of the Big East basement
- Spent one year on Billy Donovan‘s staff at Florida, during which the Gators reached the 2012 NCAA Elite Eight
- Reunited with Self at the Jayhawks in 2012, serving as an assistant there ever since
- During this current stint at KU, Roberts has been part of seven NCAA Tournaments (two Final Fours and one National Championship) and nine Big 12 titles
- Served as interim head coach for the first four games of the 2022-23 season, going 4-0
- Along with his wife, Pascale, has two sons
