Long-time Omaha head coach Derrin Hansen fired after 17 seasons

Derrin Hansen, who has been at Omaha since 1998 and the head coach since 2005 when the program was still D-II, was fired on Sunday following a second-straight five-win season. Hansen went 253-260 overall and 132-174 since moving up to D-I competition in 2011.

“I ask that the entire Maverick community join me in thanking Coach Hansen for his many contributions to Omaha Athletics and our university,” AD Adrian Dowell said in a statement. “In 17 years leading Omaha Men’s Basketball, Coach Hansen represented UNO with class, impacted countless lives through his mentorship of student-athletes on and off the court, and successfully transitioned the program to the Division I level. We wish Derrin and his family nothing but the best in the future, and we are forever grateful for their impact on Omaha Athletics.”

The Mavericks went to the CIT in 2014 and CBI in 2016, two of Hansen’s four above-.500 seasons at the D-I level, and was named Summit League COY in 2019. Before the transition, Hansen led UNO to the D-II NCAA Tournament in both 2008 and 2010.
