Patrick Sellers hired as head coach at Central Connecticut

Former Blue Devils’ player and longtime D-I assistant Patrick Sellers has been named head coach at alma mater Central Connecticut, the school announced on Monday. Sellers had been at Fairfield for the last two seasons and also coached at UConn for seven seasons earlier in his career.

“Patrick’s experience in coaching is what we were looking for,” interim AD Tom Pincince said in a release. “His leadership qualities, vision and passion were evident throughout the interview process. He knows what it takes to be successful at CCSU and what the experience of being a Blue Devil does for our student-athletes.”

This is the first D-I head coaching opportunity for Sellers, who started out his coaching career at St. Thomas Aquinas HS (CT) before spending four seasons at CCSU as an assistant under Howie Dickenman. Along the way he has also coached at UMass, Hofstra, Creighton, DePaul and Fairleigh Dickinson. While serving as associate head coach for Jim Calhoun, he was part of the Huskies’ 2009 Final Four run and helped build the foundation for the 2011 NCAA Championship team.

“I am extremely grateful to President Toro and her leadership team, along with the search committee, for the opportunity to lead the Blue Devils,” Sellers said. “I have always had a special place in my heart for Central. I look forward to adding to the successful legacy of Central Connecticut basketball and I am excited to get to work with our student-athletes.”

Former CCSU head coach Donyell Marshall resigned in March after five seasons at the helm and Sellers’ name was among the first to pop up as a replacement. He will inherit a program that has double-digit conference losses in each of the last seven seasons and has not been to the NCAA Tournament since 2007.
