Paul Weir promoted to head coach at New Mexico State

Paul Weir, who has been an assistant at New Mexico State since 2007, has been selected as the program’s new head coach. Weir will replace his predecessor Marvin Menzies, who left earlier this month to take the same position at UNLV.

New Mexico State never finished lower than third place in the WAC during Menzies and Weir’s time on campus and the Aggies won the league tournament five times, leading to five NCAA Tournament bids. The prospect of continuing that success with the inside hire was certainly a huge factor for the program. From 2011-16, Weir was Menzies’ associate head coach.

This is Weir’s first head coaching job at the college level, though he led Don Bosco Catholic HS in Toronto for four seasons (1999-2003). He did his undergrad at York University and has subsequently earned three master’s degrees, one at each of his last three college jobs (Northwestern State, Iowa and New Mexico State).
