When Pokémon Emerald was first released back in 2004, fans were busy trying to catch the game’s most well-known stars—Rayquaza, Deoxys, and the cover boys. But as time went on, it was soon evident that the real test for any trainer was not catching these headliners. But the biggest test was buried deep inside: the Legendary Giants, also known as the Regi Trio—Regirock, Regice, and Registeel. Today, 21 years on, their reputation as the most difficult legendaries to get in Pokémon Emerald is still intact.

The Regi Trio: Why these legendaries were the challenge of the century for 2004’s Pokémon Emerald

Whereas Rayquaza flew high over the Sky Pillar, or Deoxys, during special events, the Regi Trio required some problem-solving and determination, which was unprecedented back then. In Pokémon Emerald, released in 2004, trainers needed to solve cryptic codes, use specific Pokémon, and perform a series of bizarre in-game tasks just to gain access to the rooms where Regirock, Regice, and Registeel slept.

The adventure began with the discovery of the Sealed Chamber, a hidden chamber on Route 134. The trainers required a Pokémon that could learn Dive and Dig, and were forced to take a Relicanth and a Wailord—the two less rare than usual Pokémon in most teams. The conditions were so strict that some players spent hours, or even days, just getting ready for step one.

This is how the difficulties of the Regi Trio became the benchmark for battles in myths

The moment they entered the Sealed Chamber, players were required to read braille texts and carry out a sequence of actions, including digging in front of a wall using Dig or putting Relicanth and Wailord in certain party positions. The gates of the three Regi graves would only open in the Hoenn region subsequently. Every tomb—desert, island, and ruins—all had a puzzle, which was walking in a pattern, waiting for the same number of turns, or performing special maneuvers in one position.

That complex process was unheard of for Pokémon games. As Serebii explains, “the Regi Trio’s rooms are only available after completing the Sealed Chamber puzzle and using the braille instructions.” The obscurity and complexity of those actions made the Regis the hardest legendary to obtain, not only in Emerald, but perhaps even in the whole series until then.

The legacy of the Regi Trio: Why their test remains 21 years on

The Regi Trio vibe is not just due to the fact that they are scarce, but also due to the feel of discovery and achievement that they evoked. Contrary to Deoxys or Rayquaza, whose locations were more linear or event-based, the Regis made the player use their mind and engage friends or online players to solve the braille puzzles.

Wikihow explains that “players had to use specific Pokémon in their party and perform unique actions to unlock each Regi’s chamber.”

Such complexity was unknown in 2004, and even now, the majority of players recall the experience as one of the most fulfilling and sentimental in Pokémon’s history.

This is the way Regi Trio’s puzzles became a rite-of-passage experience for devoted trainers

For others, Regirock’s, Regice’s, and Registeel’s capture was the ultimate badge of honor—a show of determination and ingenuity. The battle was so hard that it was a playground urban legend, forum topic, and strategy guide article, and its inclusion made the Regi Trio the ultimate test for Pokémon Emerald.

Twenty years since its initial release in Pokémon Emerald, the Regi Trio is still the toughest and greatest legendary challenge of the game. Their mystery, mysteries, and sense of accomplishment that they gave endured, and they are a mythical challenge trainer still celebrated today.
