  • Hometown: Red Oak, Oklahoma
  • Alma Mater: Eastern Oklahoma State College (BA, 1930)
  • Started his coaching career at Fanshawe HS (OK), serving as an assistant (1930-32) then head varsity coach (1932-37)
  • Coached his alma mater, Red Oak HS (OK), from 1937-42 and then moved to Arkansas to coach Van Buren HS from 1942-48
  • Joined Eugene Lambert‘s staff at Arkansas as an assistant in 1948 and then became head coach the following year
    • Led the Razorbacks for three seasons, winning a share of the 1950 Southwest title in his first year
    • Resigned in 1952 after going 10-14; left with an overall record of 35-37 (19-17 SWC)
  • Coached at Connors State College back home in Warner, Oklahoma for one season
  • Hired in 1953 to be the head coach and athletic director at New Mexico A&M (later New Mexico State)
    • Coached the Aggies for twelve seasons, compiling an overall record of 134-146
    • From 1958-61, his teams won/shared three Border titles, reached two NCAA Tournaments and were 56-23 overall
    • Resigned in 1965 after going 20-50 over the previous three seasons, all as a D-I Independent
  • Stepped aside as AD in 1958; also coached the Aggies’ baseball team from 1957-65, going 68-126-3 overall
    • The school honored the former coach by dedicating Presley Askew Field in 1981
    • Inducted into the New Mexico State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1970
