- Alma Mater: Cheyney University (BS, 1987)
- Played for legendary Philly head coach Speedy Morris at Roman Catholic HS (PA)
- After starting out at D-II Philadelphia U playing for legendary head coach Herb Magee from 1981-84
- Finished his career at D-II Cheyney (PA) and got his start coaching there, working under Charles Songster for two years as an assistant
- Inducted into the Cheyney University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005
- Assisted Dave “Lefty” Ervin at William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia during the 1987-88 season
- Joined Speedy Morris‘ staff at La Salle, working with the Explorers for five seasons
- During that tenure, he was part of three NCAA Tournaments, one NIT and two MAAC titles
- Spent one season assisting Jan van Breda Kolff at Vanderbilt before arriving at UMBC in 1994
- Was an assistant under Earl Hawkins for one season and Tom Sullivan for nine seasons
- Became the Retrievers’ head coach in 2004, going 85-159 over eight years at the helm
- His 2007-08 team went 24-9 and swept the America East regular season and Tournament titles
- That team appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history
- Monroe resigned in 2012 following three straight seasons in which UMBC won 5 or fewer games
- In 2014, after a few years away, Monroe became head boys basketball coach at Brandywine HS (DE)
- Returned to Philly in 2016 to become an assistant to his former mentor Morris at St. Joseph’s Prep
- Reunited with Magee in 2020, joining his staff at the former Philadelphia U (now Thomas Jefferson U) as an assistant coach
- Stayed with the D-II program following Magee’s 2022 retirement, working under new head coach Jimmy Reilly
