Real ID implementation in the US went into effect on May 7, 2025. For Californians, a standard driver’s license will no longer cut it for domestic air travel or entering some federal facilities. If you are not already in possession of a Real ID, don’t worry. Although the deadline has now passed, you are still able to obtain a Real ID in California through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This will lead you through qualifications, documents needed, how to apply, and deadlines to keep an eye out for—all for applicants after the actual deadline for Real ID in California.

California Real ID eligibility requirements

California DMV has made some definite eligibility criteria for applicants who apply for a Real ID-compliant card. First, you should be an American citizen or a legal resident of the United States of America. Real ID is mandatory now, so switching over isn’t optional if you need to fly or gain access to secure facilities with your license. California residents alone are eligible to apply for a California Real ID, and you should possess an active California driver’s license or identification card that is not more than a certain age.

Additionally, the applicants must also be capable of producing documents verifying their identity, Social Security number, and state residency. You must also appear in the state of California when applying and should not have any suspensions or revocations pending on your current license.

If you’re new to the state, you’ll need to transfer your out-of-state license and follow the Real ID application process from the beginning. Minors under the age of 18 are not eligible for a Real ID unless they can present the required documentation and parental consent, where applicable.

Required documents to get the California Real ID

Prior to seeing your local DMV office, preparation is most critical in obtaining the required documents to apply for your Real ID. The California DMV Real ID initiative necessitates three types of documents: identification, Social Security number proof, and two distinct documents demonstrating California residency.

Identification (i.e., U.S. passport, birth certificate)

To confirm your identity, you will be asked to present an original or certified copy of an identification document bearing your full legal name and date of birth. The simplest accepted documents are a current U.S. passport, a certified U.S. birth certificate, or a permanent resident card. Foreign passports are accepted if they are accompanied by an approved immigration status document. Your present legal name must be the name on this document, or you will need to provide a legal name change document, like a marriage certificate or court order, as well.

Proof of Social Security Number

Your Social Security number should be verified in the process of the Real ID application in California. You can provide your original Social Security card, a W-2 form, or a paycheck stub showing your full Social Security number. The document should be printed in your official name on your proof of identity. You can’t provide photocopies, so ensure that the documents provided are originals or certified copies.

Two proofs of California residency

Requirements for California Real ID demand two individual documents that establish your residency in the state. Documents such as a utility bill, rental or lease agreement, mortgage statement, vehicle registration, or insurance policy are accepted. Both documents should contain your full name and your current California address. Digital copies are not accepted; printed copies should be presented at your DMV appointment.

Application process: How to get the California Real ID

Now that you know what to present, your mission is to go ahead with the application process. Even though the California Real ID deadline is over, qualified residents can still have the document by going through the necessary procedures. Below is an application process step-by-step guide for the application process.

Step 1: Start your Real ID application online

Begin by going to the California DMV website and starting your Real ID application. You can use this pre-application service to enter your information, upload copies of your documents (optional), and save time when you visit the DMV office. You will receive a confirmation code that you’ll bring with you to the office.

Step 2: Get your necessary documents

After you’ve finished the online step, get your original documents ready: proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and two proofs of California residency. It’s also a good practice to check out the California DMV Real ID checklist online so you’ll be sure you’re prepared. Incomplete documents are the most frequent reason for the prolonged processing of applications.

Step 3: Make an appointment at a DMV office

Appointments are strongly advised, particularly as there has been greater demand for Real ID cards since the deadline. An appointment can be booked online from the DMV’s website. Choose a date and location most convenient for you and plan to get there at least 15 minutes prior with everything in hand.

Step 4: Go to the DMV and fill out the application in person

During your visit, DMV personnel will examine your documents, take your picture, and receive your application fee. Sign your forms and confirm your mailing address. You may also be asked to pass a basic vision test if you are using glasses or have a vision prescription.

Step 5: Have your California Real ID card mailed to you

Once your request is processed, you will be sent your Real ID card by mail. The California DMV processes Real ID cards within two to four weeks. You will receive a temporary license upon leaving the DMV office and can use it for driving, but not for federal ID purposes.

Cost and duration to obtain the California Real ID

As of 2025, the base Real ID fee for a California Real ID is the same as that for a standard driver’s license or identification card renewal—generally $35 to $41, depending on the type of license. If you are renewing a license and applying for a Real ID at the same time, your fee will be included in your renewal fee. If you flip before your renewal is actually due, you might have to pay a correction fee.

Even though the deadline for the California Real ID was May 7, 2025, the DMV still accepts upgrade requests for those who require it. But if you attempt to get on a domestic flight or access certain secure federal buildings without a Real ID or a passport, you will be denied. This makes getting one as soon as possible the top priority for those who fly or frequently need to enter government buildings.

Although the deadline has come and gone, it is not too late to get your ID card or driver’s license renewed to a California Real ID. The process is straightforward if you are eligible and have the necessary documents. If you will be traveling anywhere within the country or require entry to federal buildings, a Real ID protects you from being noncompliant and makes life easier in the future. Don’t wait until the last minute to schedule your appointment and fill out the pre-application online. Real ID is mandatory now, so switching over isn’t optional if you need to fly or gain access to secure facilities with your license.
