If you’re taking a domestic flight or visiting certain federal properties, you should be aware of the Real ID requirements. This government-mandated standard for identification will eventually become the norm for secure identification nationwide. When you’re renewing your license or applying for one for the first time, having a clear sense of what you need to bring can save you time and frustration. With the deadline looming, millions of Americans wonder: what in the world is a Real ID, and how do I get one?

What is Real ID?

Real ID is government-compliant identification that meets more stringent security standards set by the U.S. government. Enacted in response to the 9/11 attacks, the Real ID Act enhances the accuracy and reliability of state identification to keep terrorists and criminals from obtaining false identification too easily. A Real ID is identical in color and shape to a typical driver’s license or state ID except for carrying a star in the corner signifying it is to federal standards. Without a Real ID, you won’t be permitted on domestic flights or enter some federal buildings after the Real ID deadline.

Real ID is not an ID card on a national level but is an upgrade to a driver’s license or state ID. The only real difference is how secure and what information you must provide in order to get it. The Real ID Act places minimum requirements for identity, legal status, and residency that all states must adhere to. When you apply for a Real ID, you’ll need to present more documentation than when you’re renewing your standard license. The intention is to make it much harder to get a fake ID or steal a person’s identity.

What is the Real ID deadline?

Real ID deadline is an important date for every American citizen. The Department of Homeland Security has established the deadline for compliance under Real ID as May 7, 2025. Domestic air travel and entry into federal buildings will be made with Real ID-compliant identification or other TSA-approved identification only after the deadline for compliance. It’s a good practice to review your state DMV or issuing agency for updates because there might be extra guidance or extensions in some states.

Most people are not yet aware of the Real ID deadline or are not clear about how it applies to them. If you travel a lot, particularly by plane, you should ensure your identification is up to date. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will be enforcing the new requirements strictly, and you will not be permitted to fly if your ID is not compliant. If you are not certain whether or not your current ID qualifies under Real ID, check the top right-hand corner for the star. If you are unable to see it, you will need to update by the deadline.

How do you have an extension of Real ID?

A few people might require additional time to obtain their Real ID for extenuating reasons, like health conditions or inability to have access to crucial documents. While the federal government decides the overall Real ID deadline, states can provide limited scope extensions or alternatives. To request an extension, telephone your state’s ID office or DMV and describe your situation. You might need to provide evidence or proof of hardship.

In others, the states will automatically grant exemptions to some individuals, like seniors or the disabled, from the deadline. Others will give you a temporary paper ID or permit you to use another form of ID until you get your Real ID. Getting ahead is worth it and not waiting until the last minute since processing takes time, particularly as the deadline looms. If granted an extension, ensure you understand the terms and keep all documentation with you when traveling.

How to obtain a Real ID

Obtaining a Real ID requires a few steps, but it is not complicated if you plan ahead. Here’s how you can do so:

Step 1: Prepare your documents

You will need to provide documentation of identity (i.e., passport or birth certificate), documentation of Social Security number, and two forms of identification showing your current address. Check the website of your state’s DMV for a complete list of accepted documents. Utility bills, bank statements, or a lease agreement are typical examples. All documents should be original or certified copies as photocopies are not typically accepted.

Step 2: Go to your state DMV or ID agency

You must apply for a Real ID in person. If at all possible, make an appointment to minimize waiting. Take all the documents you need with you. Some states permit starting online, but you will still have to show up at the DMV to submit your documents and finish the process.

Step 3: Pay the fee and finish the application

Fill out the Real ID application form provided by your state. State fees vary, so find out ahead of time for details. Payment is usually made when applying. Fee waivers can be available in some states for seniors, veterans, or low-income applicants.

Step 4: Obtain a new photo and provide fingerprints (if required)

All DMVs will also get a new photo for your Real ID. Fingerprints can be required by some states for additional protection. Remove your glasses, hats, or anything else that could be hiding your face in the photo.

Step 5: Get your Real ID

After your application is processed and approved, you’ll be sent your Real ID or may stop by to retrieve it at the DMV. Processing times will vary, so ask for an estimated time frame from your DMV. Keep hold to of your receipt as proof of application.

Real ID compliance FAQs

Is a Real ID necessary to travel domestically in the United States?

Once the Real ID deadline passes, you will have to travel within the U.S. by air on a Real ID or other TSA-acceptable document.

Can I use a passport instead of a Real ID?

You can use a current U.S. passport or other TSA-acceptable identification in place of a real ID to travel within the country and visit federal buildings.

What happens if my state ID is not Real ID-compliant?

After the deadline, you’ll need to upgrade to a Real ID or use another acceptable form of identification for TSA compliance and federal access. Check your state’s DMV for state ID updates and upgrade options.

Tips for a smooth Real ID application

  • Start the process early to avoid last-minute stress.
  • Double-check your documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Make an appointment at the DMV to save time.
  • Inquire about fee waiving or special consideration if necessary.
  • Retain your receipt and all short-term documents until your Real ID comes.

Why Real ID is so important for TSA compliance and state ID modifications

The Real ID Act isn’t just about travel; it’s about homeland security and the use of identification documents that are reliable and hard to counterfeit. TSA compliance is central to the program because it protects people traveling and federal facilities from threats. All documents should be original or certified copies. Upgrades to state IDs are also vital because they provide all residents with secure identification that complies with federal requirements. You can also find official details at USA.gov Real ID.
