Rex Walters fired by San Francisco
Another WCC head coaching position has opened up as San Francisco has parted ways with Rex Walters. In eight seasons at USF, Walters led the Dons to a 126-125 overall record. Though he never reached the NCAA Tournament, the Dons had one bid each to the NIT, CBI and CIT during his tenure.
His best season was 2013-14, when the Dons finished 21-12 (2nd in the WCC) and earned a 4-seed in the NIT. But following a first round exit, San Francisco finished the next two seasons with 14-18 and 15-15 overall records, respectively. The Dons finished this year of WCC play in 5th place, but their 8-10 conference record was well behind Saint Mary’s and Gonzaga (both 15-3) at the top of the field.
Prior to USF, Walters spent two seasons as the head coach at Florida Atlantic. He also had a long playing career, spending seven seasons in the NBA with the Nets, 76ers and Heat.
