- Hometown: Spring Valley, New York
- Alma Mater: Tennessee Tech University (BS, 1999 & MA, 2001)
- Cabrera is a NY-native and is of Dominican descent; his father, Hugo, is a member of the Dominican Republic Basketball Hall of Fame
- After one year each at Kemper Military School (MO) and Vincennes University (IN), he transferred to Tennessee Tech and played for coach Frank Harrell
- Spent one year coaching at Volunteer Christian Academy (TN) and then joined the staff of new Tennessee Tech head coach Jeff Lebo as a GA
- Worked as an assistant at Miami Killian HS (FL) for the 2001-02 season, then at Keystone College (PA) for two seasons, 2002-04
- Became the head coach at Lackawanna CC (PA) in 2004, going 100-29 over four seasons at the helm
- Moved back to the Division I ranks in 2008, spending four seasons as an assistant under John Shulman at Chattanooga
- Returned to his alma mater in 2012 and spent the next five years on staff there, two as associate head coach, under Steve Payne
- Next up were two-year stints at Austin Peay (under Matt Figger) and Arkansas State (under Mike Balado)
- Hired in 2021 to be the head coach at Tallahassee CC (FL); went 49-15 in two seasons and coached a number of future D-I players
- In March 2023, Cabrera was named head coach at Northwestern State in the Southland, his first D-I head coaching job
