- Starred at Highland Springs HS (VA) before playing four seasons for head coach Terry Holland at Virginia
- Went to the NCAA Tournament all four years, including two Final Four trips, and won three ACC titles
- Standing 5’10” tall, Stokes won he 1984 Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award
- Spent the 1984-85 seasons as one of Holland’s assistants to kick off his coaching career
- Was an assistant to Jim Larrañaga at Bowling Green for a year before spending eight years with Dave Odom‘s at Wake Forest
- Assisted Jeff Jones for one season at alma mater Virginia and Rick Barnes for one season at Texas
- Hired in 1999 to be the head coach at Virginia Tech, leading the Hokies for four seasons
- Went 45-70 overall during a tenure that saw the program shift from the Atlantic-10 to the Big East
- In their first few years in the more competitive Big East, the Hokies struggled to win and Stokes let go in 2003
- Spent the next two seasons as an assistant at South Carolina under Odom; the Gamecocks won the NIT in 2005
- Was the head coach at East Carolina for two seasons, finishing with less than 10 wins each year
