Rob Jeter hired as head coach at Western Illinois

Minnesota assistant Rob Jeter has been named head coach at Western Illinois, the school announced Monday. Jeter grew up in Chicago and has head coaching experience, going 184-170 over eleven seasons at Milwaukee.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Rob as our next head men’s basketball coach,” AD Danielle Surprenant said in a release. “He has seen success as both a head coach and assistant, and his drive and passion for the game are contagious. His recruiting ties, especially in the Midwest, and his vision and direction for the program were exactly what we were looking for. I’m ecstatic to see where he will lead our men’s basketball program.”

Jeter won two Horizon League titles, went to the postseason four times (two NCAA, one NIT, one CBI) and was named the Horizon COY in 2011. Before joining Richard Pitino‘s staff in 2018, he spent two seasons under Marvin Menzies at UNLV.

“My family and I are excited join the Leatherneck family and the Macomb community,” Jeter said. “I’m especially excited to meet our players and their families and connect with our alums and student body. Together, we will accomplish great things! It’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work!”

The Leathernecks have never been to the D-I NCAA Tournament, having moved up to the top level in 1981. Jeter will inherit a team that finished below .500 in six-straight years under former head coach Billy Wright and already lost leading scorer Kobe Webster (transferred to Nebraska).
