- Hometown: Detroit, Michigan
- Alma Mater: Central State University (BA, 1996)
- Graduated from Mumford HS in Detroit and went on to be a two-time team captain at Division II Central State (OH)
- Spent two years as associate head coach at Detroit Central HS and then four as the head coach at Crockett Technical HS (MI)
- Went 64-20 overall at Crockett and won the Class B state championship in 2001
- Worked on Jim Christian‘s staff at Kent State for two years and then spent seven seasons at Jim Boeheim‘s staff at Syracuse
- Hired as the head coach at Eastern Michigan in 2011, winning the MAC West in his first season and being named MAC COY
- He compiled an overall record of 166-155 through ten seasons as the Eagles’ head coach
- In March 2021, Murphy and EMU announced that they would be parting ways
- In the same statement, it was announced that Murphy would take over as President and GM of the Motor City Cruise, the new G-League affiliate of the NBA’s Detroit Pistons (relocated/rebranded from the Northern Arizona Suns in 2021
- Promoted to Assistant GM for the Pistons in June 2022; placed on administrative leave in October 2022 pending an investigation into a workplace misconduct allegation involving a former female employee
- Along with his wife, TeNesha, has one son and one daughter
