Rodney Billups fired after five seasons at Denver
Two days after Denver finished their season 2-19, failing to qualify for the Summit League Tournament, head coach Rodney Billups has been fired. Billups, a Denver native and UD alum, has seen win totals decline each year since his hiring before the 2016-17 season.
“We are thankful for Rodney’s service and dedication to the program and its student-athletes,” Vice Chancellor for Athletics Karlton Creech said in a statement. “We wish him and his family the best in his future endeavors.”
On paper, Billups was a perfect hire: poached from Colorado, a local guy who played for the Pioneers, name recognition on his own and from older brother, Chauncey. But things never clicked and the Pioneers were never able to win consistently under his leadership. He finishes with an overall record of 48-94 (23-53).
According to the release, a national search for Billups’ replacement will begin immediately.
