  • Starred at Angleton HS (TX) before playing for coach Tom Pate at D-II St. Edward’s in Austin, TX
  • Began coaching right after graduation, spending a year as an assistant at his alma mater before working at the high school level
    • Was a high school head coach for three years in Texas, two at Somerville HS and one at his alma mater Angleton HS
  • Joined Harry Miller‘s staff at Baylor in 1996 and after two years moved on to UNC Wilmington to assist Jerry Wainwright
  • Longest tenured position was an eleven-year stretch working with Rick Barnes at Texas; recruited and coached a number of future NBA players including LaMarcus Aldridge, Kevin Durant, D.J. Augustin and Tristan Thompson
  • Became the head coach at Fresno State in April 2011
    • Won 126 games in seven years, turning the team into a consistent 20+ game winner
    • Went to three postseason tournaments: a CBI runner-up in 2014, an NIT in 2017 and the 2016 NCAA Tournament
  • Hired in March 2018 to be the new head coach of the UTEP Miners, returning to his home state of Texas
    • Went 37-48 in three seasons at the helm, but did not reach the postseason
  • Left UTEP in April 2021 to return to Texas as associate head coach under newly-hired Chris Beard
    • In December 2022, Terry was named acting head coach following Beard’s arrest for domestic assault
  • Beard was officially fired in January and Terry was given the opportunity to coach the rest of the season
    • The Longhorns finished 2nd in the Big 12, won the 2023 Big 12 Tournament title and reached the NCAA Elite Eight under Terry
    • In March 2023, Terry has the interim tag removed and officially signed a five-year contract to be head coach at UT
