Georgia State’s Ron Hunter hired as Tulane head coach

Ron Hunter, who has been the head coach at Georgia State since 2011, has accepted an offer to become the head coach at Tulane. Hunter told reporters Sunday “I love the people of Atlanta and the Georgia State community. They’ve been great to me. But it’s time.”

Tulane is getting an accomplished coach with postseason experience and a winning pedigree in Hunter. The Panthers went to the NCAA Tournament three times and won the Sun Belt regular season title three times in the eight seasons Hunter was the helm. Prior to GSU, he led the IUPUI Jaguars to the 2003 NCAA Tournament, just a few years after the program transitioned from NAIA status to Division I.

So what’s next for Georgia State? Well former Detroit/Houston/Ball State head coach Ray McCallum has been Hunter’s associate head coach for the last two seasons. Hiring him would likely maintain some stability within a program coming off back-to-back NCAA berths. If not McCallum, GSU may consider Florida State assistant and former Georgia Southern head coach Charlton Young, or Bethune-Cookman head coach Ryan Ridder.
