  • Alma Mater: University of Maine (BA, 1961) / Springfield College (MA, 1965 & PhD, 1968)
  • Early on his career, Chipman coached at the high school level in Maine
  • Started his collegiate career at D-II Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY
    • Went 166-55 in nine seasons at Hartwick and appeared in seven D-II NCAA Tournaments
    • Also served as Hartwick’s athletic director during his tenure as basketball coach
    • Was inducted into the Hartwick Athletics Hall of Fame (c/o 1996)
  • Hired in 1977 to be the head coach at Lafayette, winning two ECC titles in three years at the helm
    • Was 60-28 overall, winning 21+ games in each of his two title-winning campaigns
  • Finished his coaching career at Pittsburgh, leading the Panthers for six seasons
    • Went to the NCAA Tournament three times and NIT twice, going 102-76 overall
    • Claimed back-to-back Eastern 8 (now A-10) Tournament titles in 1981 and 1982
  • Stepped away from coaching in 1986 to work in the private business sector
  • Passed away of cancer in 1997 at the age of 58; survived by his wife, Kathi, and five children
