Sam Scholl, a former USD assistant who has been acting head coach since late February, has been elevated to head coach at San Diego. Scholl is a USD grad who has two stints as an assistant at the school totaling nine seasons.
Previous head coach Lamont Smith resigned ahead of the Toreros CIT appearance, in which Scholl led the team to a 2-1 record. Smith was arrested in mid-February, though no charges were ever filed in the matter.
San Diego has not been to the NCAA Tournament since 2008, when they were coached by Bill Grier.
