Nebraska fires head football coach Scott Frost

One day after the Huskers suffered in embarrassing loss at home to Georgia Southern, Nebraska AD Trev Alberts has fired head football coach Scott Frost. In 4+ seasons at the helm, Frost was just 16-31 overall and failed to reach any bowl games.

“Earlier today I met with Coach Frost and informed him we were making a change in the leadership of our football program, effective immediately,” Alberts said in a statement. “Scott has poured his heart and soul into the Nebraska football program both as a quarterback and head coach, and I appreciate his work and dedication.”

Frost came back to Lincoln in 2018 after leading UCF to a perfect 13-0 season that featured a Peach Bowl win and a #6 ranking in the final AP Poll. He played for Tom Osborne and the Huskers in the 1990s during the program’s heyday, spending two seasons as the starting quarterback. A redshirt during the 1995 National Championship season after transferring from Stanford, Frost led the team to a 13-0 record as a senior in 1997 en route to another national title.

The 2018 hire seemed like a no-brainer, with the former star QB and Nebraska-native coming back home after presiding over a stellar season from an out-of-nowhere mid-major program. The Huskers went 4-8 in that first year and improved slightly to 5-7 a year later, but never were able to get over the hump under Frost. The team regressed further in 2020 and the writing has been on the wall for some time that if things didn’t turn around this year, it would be Frost’s last. And after surrendering a lead to lose the opener to Northwestern in Ireland, the Huskers’ Saturday loss to the mid-major Eagles sealed the deal.

“After the disappointing start to our season, I decided the best path forward for our program was to make a change in our head coaching position,” Alberts continued. “Associate Head Coach Mickey Joseph will serve as our interim head coach for the remainder of the 2022 season.”

This is the first FBS head coaching opportunity for Joseph, who is in his first year on staff after spending the last five years at LSU. Joseph, who is also a former Nebraska QB, was assistant head coach at LSU in 2020 when the Tigers won the National Championship.
