Skyline Regular Season Champions
Full list of MSC/Skyline Conference men’s basketball regular season champions, including head coach, by year. Bold means team went on to win the NCAA National Championship the same year. The Skyline Conference, also known as the Mountain States Conference (MSC), was born from the Rocky Mountain Conference (RMC). The RMAC was established in 1909 with four member institutions all located in the state of Colorado: Colorado, Colorado State, Colorado School of Mines, and Colorado College. The RMC expanded over the years, bringing on member schools from surrounding Utah, Wyoming and Montana. In 1938, seven members of the RMC left to form the new Skyline Conference: BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Utah, Utah State and Wyoming. The original conference still exists as the NCAA Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), including long-time members Colorado School of Mines (charter) and Western State Colorado (since 1924).
Colorado left in 1948, prompting the conference to take the Skyline Six nickname, and when New Mexico and Montana joined in 195 they became the Skyline Eight. The conference dissolved after the 1961-62 season, with four members going to the WAC and the other four staying Independent. Utah and Wyoming won the most conference titles (8 each), followed by Colorado (4).
