- Stephen Louis Fisher
- Born March 24, 1945
- Hometown: Herrin, Illinois
- Alma Mater: Illinois State University (BS, 1967 & MS, 1968)
- Played for James Collie at then D-II Illinois State; helped lead the team to the D-II Final Four as a senior in 1967
- Started his coaching career at Rich East HS (IL), where he started as an assistant and eventually became the team’s head coach
- Moved up to the college level in 1979 as an assistant to Les Wothke at Western Michigan
- Became an assistant under Bill Frieder at Michigan at 1982, serving in that role for seven seasons
- Took over as the Wolverines’ head coach heading into the 1989 NCAA Tournament following Frieder’s decision to take the job at Arizona State
- Michigan athletic director Bo Schembechler fired Frieder rather than allow him to coach the Wolverines in the Tournament
- Led the Wolverines to a surprise National Championship title, taking over the team and eading them to six straight victories
- Reached the National Championship Game again in both 1992 and 1993 with Michigan, but those appearances were later vacated by the NCAA due to the Michigan/Ed Martin Scandal
- Won the NIT in 1997 with Michigan, but that entire season was vacated by the NCAA due to the same scandal
- Hired in 1999 to be the head coach at San Diego State, taking over a program that had 13 losing seasons in the previous 14 yrs
- Went to eight NCAA Tournaments, five NITs and twice reached the Sweet Sixteen in eighteen seasons
- Won six Mountain West regular seasons titles with SDSU, five of which coming in his final seven years before retiring
- Announced his retirement in April 2017, leaving as the winningest coach in program history (386 victories)
- Along with his wife, Angie, has two sons
