- Hometown: San Antonio, Texas
- Alma Mater: Texas Lutheran University (BA, 1995) / University of Incarnate Word (M.Ed, 1997)
- Played at Texas Lutheran and served as team captain as a senior in 1994-95
- Started his coaching career working under Danny Kaspar at then-NAIA Incarnate Word in his hometown, San Antonio
- After one year at Garden City CC in Kansas, Lutz reunited with Kaspar in 2000 at D-I Stephen F. Austin
- In ten total seasons under Kaspar, Lutz was part of three postseason tournaments (all NAIA at UIW)
- Hired in 2006 by new SMU head coach Matt Doherty and worked with the Mustangs for the next four seasons
- Left Texas to join Greg McDermott‘s staff in 2010; made his first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance with the Bluejays in 2012 and went to four in total in his seven years there
- Played a role in the development of Doug McDermott, an All-American, National POY and future NBA player
- Worked on Matt Painter‘s staff at Purdue from 2017-21, going to the NCAA Tournament every year (excluding 2020)
- In April 2021, Lutz was hired to be the fourth-ever head coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
- He took the Islanders to both the 2022 and 2023 NCAA Tournaments via Southland Tournament crowns
- In his second season, Lutz’ team won the Southland regular season title outright and he was named Southland COY
- Lutz was hired in March 2023 as the new head coach at Western Kentucky
- In his lone season, Lutz led the Toppers to a 2024 CUSA Tournament title and their first NCAAT since 2013
- Left WKU in April 2024 to become the head coach at Oklahoma State in the Big 12
