  • Alma Mater: University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (BS, 1984) / Bowling Green State University (MS, 1987)
  • Started his coaching career with a two-year stint (1984-86) as the head coach at St. John’s Military Academy (WI)
  • Spent ten seasons as an assistant at Bowling Green under head coach Jim Larrañaga, was part of two NIT appearances
  • Arrived at Hampton in 1996 as an assistant to Byron Samuels then took over as the Pirates’ head coach a year later
    • Went 90-57 in five seasons at the helm, culminating in back-to-back MEAC titles and NCAA Tournament bids
    • The 2001 Pirates (as a 15-seed) upset 2-seed Iowa State in the First Round for their first NCAA win in program history
  • Left Hampton in 2002 to be the head coach at Evansville, leading the Purple Aces for the next five seasons
    • Did not reach the same level of success, resigning in 2007 with just a 54-91 overall record and no postseason berths
  • Spent two years as an assistant coach at Bradley under Jim Les before resigning in 2009
  • Has been at Creighton since 2010, joining Greg McDermott‘s staff as an assistant and getting promoted to assistant to the head coach in 2013
    • With the Bluejays, Merfeld has been part of six NCAA Tournaments (including one Sweet Sixteen), two NITs and one CBI
  • Along with his wife, Mary Jo, has one daughter and one son
