  • Started his coaching career at his alma mater, Gonzaga, spending four seasons as an assistant under Buoncristiani
  • Spent eight seasons as an assistant to Mike Montgomery at Montana, getting promoted to head coach when Montgomery left for Stanford in 1986
    • Won 97 games over five seasons as head coach, sweeping the Big Sky in 1991 and earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament
  • Was then head coach at Colorado State for seven seasons, reaching the NIT twice and winning 121 (59%) of his games there
  • Longest-tenured position was as the head coach at Utah State, where we won 402 games in seventeen seasons and went to eight NCAA Tournaments and four NITs
    • Reached the postseason each season 2000-12, winning 7 conference titles and 6 conference tournaments over that span
    • Got his 500th career win on January 23, 2010, as his Aggies beat his former assistant Don Verlin‘s Idaho Vandals
    • Retired after the 2014-15 season, his 29th overall as a head coach, with 620 career coaching victories
  • Along with his late wife, Vicki, has two sons and two daughters
