- Alma Mater: University of Oklahoma (BA, 1951)
- Was a three-year lettermen at Oklahoma, playing basketball for the Sooners under head coach John MacLeod
- First coaching stop was at Cameron State JC in Lawton, OK, where he coached both baseball and basketball
- Won the 1958 National JC Championship in baseball and on the hardwood appeared in three NJCAA Tournaments
- Compiled an 93-24 record in his four years as the head basketball coach
- Hired in 1960 to be an assistant coach under Dick Harp at Kansas and was elevated to head coach in 1964
- Won 348 games in 19 seasons as the Jayhawks’ head coach, reaching the NCAA Tournament seven times and NIT twice
- Coached in two NCAA Final Fours and won six Big Eight regular season titles
- Spent two years as the head coach at Oral Roberts, going 21-35 (10-14) overall
- Later on, Owens coached at Metro Christian Academy in Tulsa, OK and spent four years as athletic director at Saint Leo University in FL
- In 2009, Owens was inducted into both the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame
