  • Alma Mater: University of Northern Iowa (BA, 1978) / Winona State University (MS, 1984)
  • Played baseball and basketball at Ames HS (IA), winning the 1973 state title in the latter; inducted into the school’s HOF in 1996
  • Spent one year at Oklahoma State playing for Guy Strong before transferring back home to UNI, where he played for the Panthers and served as team captain for head coach James Berry
  • Early coaching stints include a three-year tenure as the head coach at Fort Dodge HS in Iowa (1981-84)
    • Joined Gary Garner‘s staff at Drake in 1984, working with the Bulldogs for three seasons
  • After one year as head coach at Ottumwa HS (IA), Carroll was hired as the head coach at Indian Hills CC (IA)
    • Went 269-50 in nine seasons at the helm, at one point winning 72-straight games, and led the program to back-to-back NCJAA National Titles in 1997 and 1998 (they would win again in 1999 after his departure)
    • Named National JUCO COY in both 1997 and 1998 and was District COY four times
  • Joined Larry Eustachy‘s staff at Iowa State as an assistant in 1998 and then was elevated to associate head coach in 1999
    • Part of two Big 12 titles and two NCAA Tournaments with the Cyclones, including a Sweet Sixteen run in 2000
  • Hired in 2001 to be the head coach at Denver, leading the Pioneers for the next six years
    • Went 79-99 overall, highlighted by 20-11 record and Sun Belt title in 2005 – Carroll was named Sun Belt COY that year
    • Fired in 2007 after going just 4-25 the previous season, only his second sub-.500 record in six seasons
  • Finished out his career as head coach at Southeastern CC in Iowa, from 2007 to his retirement in 2017
