- Alma Mater: Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg (BA, 1930)
- Played basketball at what is now Pittsburg State (KS), graduating in 1930
- Was the head coach at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN for two years, going 21-23 overall
- Next stop was a four-year stint (1938-42) at Central Missouri, with a fifth year (1945-46) after WWII
- Went to the NAIA Tournament in all five seasons and led the Mules to the NAIA Final Four in 1942
- Inducted into the Central Missouri HOF in 1993
- Hired in 1946 to be the head coach at North Carolina, leading the Tar Heels for six seasons
- Compiled a 100-65 record during that time, winning 19+ games in each of his first three years
- Never reached the postseason and went 12-15 in each of his final two years at the helm
- Became both athletic director and head basketball coach at Davidson in 1955
- Went 40-84 in five years as the head coach before stepping away from coaching in 1960
- Also coached the golf team to five SoCon championships
- Continued his work as athletic director until his retirement in 1974
- His two basketball hires – Lefty Driesell and Terry Holland – would go on to great success at Davidson and elsewhere
- Inducted into the Davidson Athletics HOF in 1990, the first inductee to not graduate from the school
