- Started out coaching at the high school level in South Carolina before getting into the college ranks as an assistant at alma mater Clemson, where he worked under head coach Bill C. Foster
- Later worked as associate head coach under Jim Wiles at Gardner-Webb before getting his first head coaching job
- Hired in 1983 to be the head coach at Baptist College of Charleston (now know as Charleston Southern)
- Went 70-46 in four seasons with the Buccaneers, winning the first two Big South titles and Big South Tournaments in 1986 and 1987
- Left for the Morehead State job in 1987 and served as head coach of the Eagles for four seasons
- Did not have the same success, going 52-64 overall before resigning in March 1991
- Returned to the high school level, working as a coach and school administrator at Georgetown County schools in Kentucky; retired in 2011
- Following his retirement, Gaither has worked in professional sales training and coaching
