Tony Madlock hired as South Carolina State head coach

On the same night that Memphis advanced to the NIT Semifinals, Tigers’ assistant coach Tony Madlock was announced as the new head coach at South Carolina State. Madlock is a 25-year college coaching veteran who also served as interim head coach at Ole Miss in 2018.

“During this process we were able to look at a number of potential candidates,” AD Stacy L. Danley said. “Tony Madlock, who I have had the opportunity to know and evaluate as a person and coach for over 10 years, is everything we were looking for: winning with integrity, amazing pedigree, incredible understanding of what it takes to win, and experience as the architect of several national ranked recruiting classes. He is a teacher, evaluator, recruiter and first class coach.”

Madlock played with Penny Hardaway at Memphis in the 90’s and has served as one of his assistants at their alma mater since 2018. He also spent time as an assistant at Ole Miss, Auburn, UTEP and Arkansas State. He went 1-4 as the Rebels’ interim head coach following Andy Kennedy‘s resignation, but this will be Madlock’s first full-time head coaching opportunity at the collegiate level.

“I am excited to join the Bulldog family. I am looking forward to getting on campus and beginning a new era in Bulldog Basketball,” said Madlock. “Thank you to President Clark, Athletic Director Stacy Danley as well as the South Carolina State for this opportunity.”

The Bulldogs have been to the NCAA Tournament five times, the most recent being in 2003. The school parted ways with former head coach Murray Garvin earlier this month after going 1-17 and finishing in last place in the MEAC North.
